What is a Business, and why should I start one?

10 Reasons Why You Should Start Your Own

Are you tired of working for someone else and dreaming of being your own boss? Starting your own business may be just the solution you need. A business can be defined as an organisation or entity that engages in commercial, industrial, or professional activities to make a profit or fulfil a particular purpose.

But that is quite a clinical definition. I personally define a business more as a lifestyle. In particular, an Australian business. It is not easy to start one. It takes a lot of time, sweat, fear and sometimes tears.

Here are ten reasons why starting your own business could be the best decision you’ll ever make.

Flexibility

Running your own business provides you with flexibility. You can decide when, where, and how much you work. Depending on what kind of business you run, on the internet, you see all the credo’s like “Say goodbye to the typical 9-5 schedule and hello to setting your own hours.” That is not how it works in the real world. It is long hours most of the time, but they are flexible hours. You can take time out to pick up the kids, have a nice meal and work, within reason, when you want.

Control

They say that “As a business owner, you have complete control over every aspect of your business. You make the decisions, set the direction, and determine the priorities. There’s no need to wait for approval from a boss or manager.” but that is not true. Yes, you control the operations of your business, but that is sort of how far it goes. All other aspects are really out of your control. You need a product or service that someone wants, if they do not want it then it does not matter how much control you have you not going to survive.

That said, you do have control operationally so you decide how it is run, what is sold and when. If you survive the first three years in making a profit, you will be on your way to becoming a successful business.

Creativity

Starting your own business allows you to use your creativity and innovation to develop new products or services, solve problems, and differentiate yourself from competitors. You can bring your ideas to life and uniquely impact your industry. This is very rewarding and true. Just be prepared that what you see as a good idea might not be what others perceive as a good idea. It can be a hard blow if you are convinced it is what people need, and the people just walk away from it.

Financial Potential

While there are no guarantees, starting a business can provide you with a higher income than working for someone else. In Australia you might find that you have some tax advantages when it comes to being a business owner, but only if they are directly related to business expenses. I am not an accountant nor am I a financial planner/adviser.

You can earn more as your business grows and becomes successful. This article on why you need a website and how to get started can help you understand the financial aspects that come with a business online website.

Personal Fulfillment

Starting your own business can be extremely rewarding and fulfilling. Being a business owner since 1998, I can tell you it is extremely rewarding and fulfilling. There is nothing more satisfying to see your hard work rewarded in your bank account. It is something you can say… “I did that”. You get to do something you love, make a positive impact on others, and create something of value. Your work becomes more than just a job; it becomes a passion.

You have to watch out that work does not overtake your private life, a mistake made by many in the past and many more in the future. Do not confuse your hobby with your work or your work with your hobby, it will take everything from you if you do that. There be a day when you look back and think “What happened?”. Don’t let it happen to you.

Independence

Owning your business means you don’t have to answer to a boss or adhere to someone else’s vision. You can create your own path and work towards your own goals. You are free to take risks and make decisions that will benefit your business. The flip side is that all the responsibility lies with you as all successes and failures will be squarely placed at your feet.

Learning Opportunities

Starting a business provides you with a wealth of learning opportunities. You’ll learn about marketing, finance, operations, and management and develop new skills that can be valuable in all areas of your life. It’s a chance to become a lifelong learner.

Job Security

A business can provide you with greater job security than working for someone else. You won’t have to worry about being laid off or downsized. Your business will be in your hands, and you can take steps to ensure its success. This does not translate into having an income all the time if your business or service is seasonal-bound or you have a product or service that is very prone to financial downturns, you might find yourself with a whole lot of months left but no monthly paycheck.

Legacy Building

Starting your own business allows you to create something that can be passed down to future generations. You can build a legacy and leave a lasting impact on the world. It’s an opportunity to create something that will outlive you. As such, you should always build a business in such a way that you can sell it in components or as a whole. Don’t be that business person that cannot sell their business because all the knowledge is contained within that person.

It is important that you keep track of your history, why decisions were made and what it is that makes your business tick. For some businesses, their IP is their commodity; for some businesses, it is just the number of sales or customers. Identify what your business’s commodity is, that is, your sellable produce when it is time to sell on the business.

Freedom

Finally, starting your own business provides you with the ultimate freedom. You can choose how you spend your time, your projects, and who you work with. You can create the lifestyle you want and live on your own terms.
